Als je al bijna tien jaar over het Internet schrijft, dan ken je je pappenheimers. Zoals een leraar geschiedenis die steeds weer dezelfde klas ziet, het ene jaar met wijde pijpen, het andere jaar met een Mening. Maar toch blijven het iedere keer weer diezelfde jonge mensen van 15 jaar.
Ieder jaar nieuwe schoolagenda's, iedere keer weer die verrassing: Nik Kershaw of Adam Ant, Beyoncé of Robbie Williams. De jeugd blijft de jeugd. Vroeger was het 'Meneer' of 'Frans', nu is het 'azijnzeiker', 'zuurpruim', 'beroepspessimist' of 'hautain minzaam'. De kloof lijkt steeds groter.
Het onbegrensde geloof in de nieuwe generatie blijft. In de jaren zestig was er de bekentenisliteratuur -- weliswaar in goede banen geleid door ouderwetse redactie -- nu is er het Internet, veel directer en daardoor zo puur.
Iedereen toont via zijn idioom de menselijke beperking. De 24 uur per dag valt maar met een zekere hoeveelheid aandacht te beleven. Kat, treinhobby, uploadtournee, lelijkheid, seks of andere particuliere ergernis, elk soupeert kostbare minuten. Erover schrijven betekent automatisch verlies aan betekenis.
Want men verveelt zich nooit.
Elk oponthoud dient gerelativeerd ('Ik besteed maar 20 minuten per dag aan mijn weblog'). Indien onmogelijk, kan het omgebogen: anders dan in een film, waar niemand naar de WC gaat, is het wel zo effectief om het publiek deelgenoot te maken van de menselijke leegloop. Om vervolgens trots op het eindproduct te wijzen.
