Fahrenheit 451
Ray Bradbury schreef in zijn klassieke toekomstvisie 'Fahrenheit 451' over een maatschappij waarin het verbranden van boeken actief werd nagestreefd. In het begin van het boek doet de hoofdpersoon actief mee aan de vanuit de regering ingestelde boekverbrandingen, later begint hij aan zijn overtuiging en enthousiasme te twijfelen. Met de kennis van vandaag zou hij die twijfel meteen weer over boord zetten.
"Al lang koesterde [Merel Roze] de wens schrijfster te worden en haar lifelog noemt ze een test om kijken of ze het kan", zo opende de Kutkrant enige tijd terug het komkommerseizoen. Een dappere uitspraak, gesuggereerde literaire aspiraties moeten doorgaans hartgrondig ontkend. Men mocht eens denken dat er sprake is van ambitie.
Roze ontkende in hetzelfde artikel dat weblogs dagboeken zijn. "Een dagboek is veel intiemer. Dit is voor een publiek geschreven." Daarin heeft ze natuurlijk gelijk; iemand die in een dagboek zou schrijven wat op de gemiddelde webpublicatie aangetroffen wordt is rijp voor de psychiater. Indien het ongebreidelde narcisme niet publiekelijk wordt tentoongespreid zou men al snel denken dat hier een ziekelijke vorm betreft, vrij van therapeutische zin.
Ondertussen laat u als testpubliek deze massale vivisectie zich welgevallen. Ú bent het slachtoffer, en u laat zich ondersmeren met steeds nieuwe varianten van reeds eerder afgekeurde cosmetica. Nemen de waanideeën van de fabrikant ergere vormen aan, dan wordt het schraal; zij die een boek schrijven hebben nog geen boek geschreven, dus schrijven zij over dat ze een boek aan het schrijven zijn.
Literaire uitgevers, elk in bezit van een fonds van naam, lopen deze zomer als hijgende kippen achter deze aanstaand geknakte nontalenten aan. Deze visieloze publicatiedrang zien wij terug bij gerenommeerde huizen als Nijgh & Van Ditmar, Querido en de Bezige Bij. Hopend op snelle cash uit de weblogzeepbel laten zij opportunistisch een proefballonnetje op, gretig geworden door de nu al duidelijke resulaten van fan-based marketing.
Fan-based marketing is een vak apart. De Bezige Bij kan het onverkoopbare project intern verkopen door te wijzen op de besparing op de marketing. De autreutel doet immers zelf het werk:

Nijgh & Van Ditmar ontwijkt de te verwachten problemen bij haar verbaal wat minder begaafde protégé door de publiciteit te gooien op het beeldmateriaal. Een plaatje zegt immers meer dan duizend woorden.
Querido leukt de fan-based marketing op met heuse interactiviteit, waardoor de 15 fans zich waarlijk betrokken voelen. Ook is er een regelmatig verslag van de grootte van het Word bestand. De uitgever hangt zijn eieren echter niet allemaal in hetzelfde netje, en zorgt ervoor dat het product ook voor een minder kritisch publiek geschikt gemaakt wordt.
Alt-F4.org raadt een destructief computervirus aan, of, als de drukpersen reeds gedraaid hebben, een litertje super.

Wat heeft Nijgh & Van Ditmar, mijn uitgeverij, in hemelsnaam te maken met een zelfgemaakt plaatje op mijn eigen persoonlijke website? Je suggereert dat N&VD alsmede Querido een hand in de pap hebben als het gaat om promotie van boeken, maar daar is niets van waar.

In May 2003 Ramon turned down an invitation to be a guest on Jay Leno's Tonight Show, as it would give just a wee bit too much publicity, which wouldn't be very useful during his travels.
When not roaming around the world, he lives in the small historic city Zwolle in The Netherlands. In his free time, he is a disc jockey in various pubs and clubs in the country.
