The Climate Change Deniers
Het was weer een druk weekje op het 9/11 front. Afgelopen zondag deed de BBC in hun serie 'The Conspiracy Files' 9/11 aan. De aflevering had de vorm van een documentaire, maar was inhoudelijk gezien meer een fantasietje. De lezers alhier genoegzaam bekende materie werd gekarakteriseerd als een fabeltje:
We find it reassuring to create an explanation that vindicates our world view. It reinforces our beliefs, suspicions and, yes, even our prejudices.
BBC: 'We're all conspiracy theorists at heart'
De manier waarop dat gebeurde was trouwens wel apart, apart in zijn ontzettende luiheid. WTC7 werd bijvoorbeeld uitgelegd door de ons reeds uitvoerig bekende 'experts' van Popular Mechanics; de slagen-om-de-arm-suggesties in de voorlopige analyse van het NIST (zie de slideshow alhier behandeld op alt-f4) werden als zekerheid gesteld; met een uitgesproken vertrouwen dat het NIST in 2007 wel dat definitieve rapport zal produceren (al twee jaar over tijd). De pancake theory werd met hulp van PM wederom als de waarheid verkondigd, volstrekt negerend dat NIST zulks inmiddels niet meer durft te beweren. En zo was er meer, alles zodanig knullig gebracht dat de (in deze zaken wel eens gebruikte) term 'hit job' eigenlijk niet van toepassing is. Ergens werd zelfs de FEMA met het NIST verward. Leuk misschien voor de lezers van Geenstijl of Sargasso. Anderen hebben echter ontdekt dat je bij een publieke omroep als de BBC een klacht kan indienen.
Dat de materie niet tot rust wil komen, blijkt ook door de verbale capriolen van George Monbiot, columnist van The Guardian. Monbiot heeft 'Loose Change' gezien, en dat viel niet goed. Tijd om 'het volkje' eens flink de oren te wassen.

(Let op de pertinente fout in de laatste zin: dat doet het NIST rapport nu juist niet niet!)
Dat Loose Change niet de meest geweldige film over dit onderwerp is, doet men in de comments eronder moeite om uit te leggen. Mensen uitmaken voor het hebben van liquid brains is niet handig, en zo staat er tussen de 777 comments af en toe een onvertogen woord. Wie kaatst kan de bal verwachten, me dunkt. Hilarisch, maar ook erg interessant, wordt dan zijn antwoord twee weken later, waarvan hier een uitgebreide quote:
The obvious corollorary to the belief that the Bush administration is all-powerful is that the rest of us are completely powerless. In fact it seems to me that the purpose of the "9/11 truth movement" is to be powerless. The omnipotence of the Bush regime is the coward's fantasy, an excuse for inaction used by those who don't have the stomach to engage in real political fights.Als we niet letten van alle ad-hominems, straw-man tactics, etc. dan vallen in bovenstaand citaat twee zaken op.

On the same day the Guardian published my article about a genuine, demonstrable conspiracy: a spy network feeding confidential information from an arms control campaign to Britain's biggest weapons manufacturer, BAE Systems. It drew 60 responses. The members of the 9/11 cult weren't interested.

Many of those who posted responses on Comment is Free contend that Loose Change (which was neatly demolished in the BBC's film The Conspiracy Files on Sunday night) is a poor representation of the conspiracists' case.

The 9/11 truthers remind me of nothing so much as the climate change deniers, cherry-picking their evidence, seizing any excuse for ignoring the arguments of their opponents. Witness the respondents to my Loose Change column who maintain that the magazine Popular Mechanics, which has ripped the demolition theories apart, is a government front.
George Monbiot in de Guardian 20/2/06
1. Monbiot ziet in 9/11-complotdenkers een regelrechte aanval op de huidige politieke structuur. Deze structuur is volgens zijn beeld broodnodig om invloed te kunnen blijven uitoefenen op de beoogde uitvoering zijn eigen (progressieve) politieke denkbeelden. Daarom staat hij diametraal tegenover 9/11-complotdenkers, die de status quo/politieke klasse totaal ondergeschikt vinden aan de gotspe die 9/11 heet. Monbiot waant zich overgeleverd aan het gepeupel. Dat het meeste gepeupel (ook 9/11-complotdenkers) niet geneigd heeft om de huidige politieke structuur te vervangen, ziet hij niet, want zoals iedere autoriteit (ook zelfbenoemde) is hij bang voor de wanorde van de menigte.
2. 9/11 Complotdenkers uitroepen tot 'Climate change deniers': behalve dat het heel erg doet denken aan holocaustontkenners, is het ook een subtiele omkering van de bewijslast. Klimaatontkenners ontkennen immers een empirisch vastgestelde gebeurtenis: het opwarmen van de aarde. 9/11 Complotdenkers ontkennen niets, maar merkt vreemde gedragingen en politieke gebeurtenissen op en rondom die dag. Dat interpretatie van zulke feiten lastig is en af en toe leidt tot fantasme ligt niet aan de achterliggende drijfveer, maar aan een tekort aan feiten. Vergelijk het met ooit door klimaatonderzoekers geschetste doemscenarios als een zeespiegelstijging van 6 meter rond 2100: pas naderhand leidden betere gegevens tot preciesere conclusies. Wie vraagt er in deze om meer onderzoek? Precies: 9/11 complotdenkers, niet Monbiot. Die maakt liever een jij-bak van formaat.
Waarom deze aandacht voor een obscure Engelse columnist?
Zijn reaktie is exemplarisch te noemen voor een bepaalde groep columnisten van progressieve signatuur. Een eerste voorbeeld daarvan uit mijn eigen ervaring is natuurlijk Francisco van Jole, die met zijn column over 9/11 in het TV-propgramma 'De Leugen Regeert' uit hetzelfde vaatje tapte. De inhoudelijke reactie op alt-f4 was blijkbaar niet de enige die hij daarop kreeg, want de dag daarop schreef hij op zijn website:
Maar wat me verbaasde was de ongekend felle toonzetting. Schelden was wel het minste, een enkele keer was er zelfs sprake van regelrechte pogingen tot intimidatie: 'ik weet je wel te vinden'. En allemaal hadden ze dezelfde strekking: het is niet toegestaan om kritiek te uiten op het complotdenken.We hebben enkel zijn woord over al die dreigmail, maar ook hier lijkt het op: wie kaatst kan de bal verwachten. Echter, in de ogen Van Jole (en ook die van Monbiot) zijn reakties als deze allemaal geloei van het gepeupel, dat in bedwang gehouden moet worden (Van Jole zegt het onderhand letterlijk). In Van Joles mailbox kan ik niet kijken. De reakties op Monbiots eerste column wel, en wat daar opvalt is de rustige toon van de meeste 'believers'. Dit in tegestelling tot de hulptroepen van Monbiot. Waar de reden van de oververhitte vervolgcolumn vandaan komt is mij een raadsel. Behalve als....
In de maanden en jaren na 11 september is er veel gediscussieerd over radicalisering van moslimjongeren en steevast luidde de klacht dat de moslimgemeenschap daar te weinig tegen doet. Misschien moet de Westerse samenleving nu eens bij zichzelf te rade gaan en zich afvragen hoe de haat van deze eigen complotdenkers zich vrijelijk kan verspreiden, waarom de verhalen zo besmettelijk blijken en hoe het komt dat maar zo weinig mensen zich er openlijk tegen uitspreken: [..]

Van Monbiot bestaat ook een andere column, van precies een maand na 9/11:

The ration packs being dropped on Afghanistan have no conceivable purpose other than to create the false impression that starving people are being fed. Even the anthrax scare looks suspiciously convenient.[..]

Wat is er in de tussentijd veranderd? De bovenstaande vragen zijn nog steeds actueel als altijd. We moeten helaas vaststellen dat de persoon die ze indertijd stelde ergens de weg is kwijt geraakt, of waren zulke vragen toen nog geen bedreiging voor de eigen positie?
George Monbiot en Francisco van Jole zijn niet de enigen die zo reageren, de fanatieke allergische reaktie lijkt echter wel het domein van de progresiieve/linkse columnisten. Andere voorbeelden zijn: Doug Thompson van capitolhillblue.com, Bruce Cockburn van thenation.com, Joe Cannon van cannonfire.com, etctera. Wat maakt het links/progressieve wereldbeeld zoe gevoelig voor 9/11 truth? Ik weet het niet. Misschien overdrijf ik wel, en is het niks anders dan dit:
He obvious feels entitled to lead the public wherever his personal ideology sees fit and he's pissed off at any upstarts stirring up popular support without his personal approval. I've seen this sort of holier than thou from the left before. It's worse than ignoring the truth, it's actively working against it for a personal agenda - and one that's sepparate than the agenda of the regular bad guys even.

9/11 en Israël, hoe zat dat ook alweer?
Drunkmen schreef over de verwarring die de termen anti-zionisme, ant-semitisme en holocaustontkenning nog wel eens willen oproepen. Het doel van de organisatie van bovenstaande Megaphone-tool lijkt bij uitstek om die verwarring voort te laten duren; een frisse blik op Israël kan dus geen kwaad.
Justin Raimondo, bekend van antiwar.com, -geenszins een 9/11-complotdenker- heeft in zijn zoektocht naar de rol van Israël in de Irak-oorlog een compendium bijgehouden van de vreemde gedragingen van Israëlische staatsburgers op en rondom 9/11.

I had been following the story in this space, and noting its significance, in the weeks before Carl Cameron broadcast his famous four-part report on Fox News, which exposed the extensive Israeli spy network in this country and opened with this electric charge:
"There is no indication that the Israelis were involved in the 9-11 attacks, but investigators suspect that the Israelis may have gathered intelligence about the attacks in advance, and not shared it"

I was told in the beginning, and in no uncertain terms, that this line of investigation is forbidden, that it’s "too hot to handle," and, implicitly, that the truth and the facts have to take second place to political correctness. Over naar Xymphora, de weblogger die zo fervent anti-Israël is dat hij het verkrijgen van het etiket 'antisemiet' onmiddelijk als bewijs van eigen gelijk zou zien. Xymphora heeft wat praktische raad voor al uw complotdenkers:

Specificity.
Predictiveness.
Falsifiability.
I want my conspiracy theory to look like a criminal indictment. I want it to name names, and provide detailed particulars of the crimes involved. For example, I want to be able to identify specific Zionists in positions of power in the Bush Administration, Zionists who have written papers commissioned by the Israeli extreme right to plan Zionist colonialism, which papers contain detailed plans which have subsequently been followed, to the letter, as a result of actions taken by the specified Zionists. I want to be able to identify specific huge donors to the Democratic Party, followed by bizarrely one-sided actions by the same party regarding the Middle East. I want to see specific examples of the power of money in repressing what appears to be mainstream Establishment thought. I want to know why specific Establishment voices, like Carter and Brzezinski, are marginalized if the American Establishment actually runs everything.
If my conspiracy theory refers to an ongoing issue, I want it to provide predictions of future events. For example, if the specific plans don’t mention an attack on Iran, because in fact Iran doesn’t lie on the territory of Greater Israel and because Iran is an obvious doctrine-of-the-periphery ally of Israel, I want to be able to make the prediction that the Zionist-controlled United States won’t attack Iran.
I want my conspiracy theory to be falsifiable. Chomsky, who should know better, has a totally unfalsifiable world-view. If X happens, it is because the American Establishment wanted it to happen and arranged for it. If negative-X happens, same thing. There is no imaginable set of facts which could disprove the Chomskian meta-conspiracy theory. Similarly, there is no conceivable set of facts which will disprove the grand ‘Illuminati’ theories. Since we can’t even identify who these illuminated ones are, or what their plan is, we can’t come up with any set of facts which would disprove the theory that they control everything.
